3D product rendering turns a CAD file, a packaging dieline or a physical sample into photoreal product imagery — white-background packshots, lifestyle scenes, 360° spins and AR-ready models. The model is built once, then re-lit and re-shot for every colourway, campaign and channel, so the second image costs a fraction of the first.

What 3D product rendering is

A render is a photograph of something that was never photographed. The product is rebuilt digitally — geometry, materials, labels, the way light behaves in the glass and on the metal — and a virtual camera shoots it. Done properly the result is indistinguishable from studio photography, because it is simulating the same physics: the same softbox, the same falloff, the same depth of field. What changes is that the set is data. Nothing has to be shipped, nothing has to exist yet, and no angle is ever unavailable because the crew has wrapped.

Industries and product types

Different categories break in different places. Beverage lives or dies on condensation, aluminium and the way a label wraps a curve. Fragrance and beauty are a glass-and-caustics problem. CGI or a photo shoot?

Photography is a repeated variable cost: every new colour, every packaging refresh, every seasonal set is another shoot with another crew and another sample to ship. Rendering is a front-loaded fixed cost — the first image carries the build, and the twentieth is close to free. It also does things a camera cannot: shoot a product that is still in tooling, hold identical lighting across a 400-SKU catalogue, or cut a bottle in half without breaking it. Where photography still wins is a one-off shot of a simple product that already exists in your warehouse. We will say so if that is your situation.

How a render gets built

Five stages, with a decision point at each so nothing expensive happens on an assumption.

  • Reference and scope — CAD, dielines, artwork, samples, and the shot list
  • Modelling — geometry rebuilt to real dimensions, or your CAD cleaned for render
  • Look development — materials, labels and finishes matched against reference
  • Lighting and camera — the set built, then a grey-scale test frame for sign-off
  • Render, comp and delivery — final frames graded and delivered in every ratio asked for

What we need from you

Clean CAD is the fastest possible start — STEP, IGES, OBJ or FBX all work, and native Solidworks or Rhino is fine. Failing that, packaging dielines and print-ready label artwork at vector resolution. If neither exists, photographs of the physical product from six angles plus a dimensioned drawing is enough to model from, and we have started projects from a lot less.

Questions

How much does 3D product rendering cost?

Cost is driven by the build, not the picture. A simple product — a can, a carton, a bottle with flat label artwork — is inexpensive to model and the images that follow are cheap. Something with complex geometry, transparency or a full environment costs more to build and then amortises across every image you take from it. Send the product and the shot list and you get a fixed quote, not an hourly estimate.

How long does a product render take?

A packshot set from clean CAD is typically three to five working days. Add a week if the model has to be built from photographs, and another if the shot needs a full environment rather than a studio backdrop. Variants and extra angles off a model that already exists usually come back within forty-eight hours.

Can you work from our CAD files?

Yes, and it is the best possible start. STEP, IGES, OBJ, FBX, and native Solidworks or Rhino files all work. Engineering CAD normally needs cleaning before it renders well — tessellation, missing fillets, geometry meant for a machine rather than a camera — and that is part of the job, not an extra.

What if the product does not exist yet?

That is one of the strongest reasons to render rather than shoot. Product imagery can be finished from CAD while tooling is still running, which means packaging, the launch page and the retailer submission are all ready on the day the first unit lands instead of six weeks after it.

Will the renders match our existing product photography?

Yes — matching an existing library is a normal request. Send a handful of hero shots and the lighting, lens and grade get matched to them, so new CGI drops into the same grid as the photography already on the site without looking like a different product.

Do you deliver files for AR and 3D product viewers?

Yes. GLB and USDZ exports, weight-optimised for the web, so the same asset that produced the packshots also runs in a Shopify 3D viewer or an iOS AR placement. Say up front if you need this — the model is built to a different budget when it has to run in a browser.

How many revisions are included?

Two rounds at each stage: model, look development, and final frames. Because lighting is signed off on a test frame before the full render runs, changes at the end are usually grade-level rather than structural.

Who owns the 3D model afterwards?

You own the delivered imagery outright. The source model and scene files can be handed over as well — say so at quoting stage, because a model built to be handed on gets organised and named differently from one built only to render here.
