3D rendering for footwear and apparel
Footwear rendering rebuilds a shoe as geometry and materials — leather grain, welt stitching, sole tread, knit and suede — then shoots it from any angle. Apparel adds cloth simulation for drape. Because a colourway is a material swap rather than a new sample, a full seasonal range costs a fraction of shooting it.
What this category is actually made of
Footwear is a materials problem more than a shape problem. Leather has grain that catches light directionally and creases where the foot flexes. Suede and nubuck have nap — a fibre direction that changes colour as the viewing angle moves, which flat shading cannot fake. Knit uppers are a woven structure, so at close range they need real geometry rather than a texture. Stitching is thread with thickness and tension, not a painted line. And the sole is usually the most complicated geometry in the product, which is exactly why cheap renders crop it out.

Where colourways change the maths
A footwear range is the same last in eight materials. Photographed, that is eight samples shipped to a studio and eight setups matched to each other. Rendered, it is one build and eight material assignments, lit identically by construction. Brands with large seasonal ranges usually find the first shoe pays for the whole set, and every season after it is cheaper again because the last already exists.
Selling before the sample arrives
Sampling is the slowest part of a footwear calendar and the least reliable. Rendering from the tech pack and last data means linesheets, pre-orders and wholesale decks can go out on the development model, months before a physical sample has cleared customs.
Questions
Can you render suede, knit and leather convincingly?
Yes — each is built as what it physically is. Suede is rendered with fibre direction so the nap shifts colour with the angle, knit as woven geometry at close range, and leather with grain and directional highlight rather than a flat photo texture.
Do you build from our tech pack or from a sample?
Either. Last data or a 3D development file is fastest. Failing that, photographs from six angles plus the tech pack dimensions are enough, and a physical sample in hand is the most accurate reference of all.
How much cheaper is a colourway than the first shoe?
Dramatically — the build is the cost and the colourway is a material swap. This is the main reason footwear brands with wide ranges move to CGI, and it compounds every season the last is reused.
Can you do apparel as well as footwear?
Yes. Apparel adds cloth simulation so the garment drapes under gravity and tension rather than being modelled in a pose, which is what makes rendered clothing read as fabric rather than as a sculpture.
Do you deliver AR models for try-on or room view?
Yes — GLB and USDZ, weight-optimised for the web. Say so up front, because a model that has to run in a browser is built to a different polygon budget than one that only has to render.
